New course to train nuclear engineers
A nuclear engineering course sponsored by the Nuclear Research Institute in Dimona and the Technological College of Be'er Sheva has begun, with 29 applicants out of 300 making the cut.
The students will study a variety of subjects, including advanced mathematics, radiation theory, chemistry, nuclear physics, and more.
The lesson planning for the course was developed by the Nuclear Research Insititute in conjunction with the Techonolgy College. Professors from the Nuclear Research Institute who took the course will also be included, as well as lecturers from the research institute. Part of the course will take place at the Institute as well.
The training for the course has already started, after an interview process that only 29 out of 300 candidates passed. The interview process took about a year, in which the candidates passed a rigorous selection process which included personal and professional interviews and aptitude tests. All of the students who were chosen are from the south of the country.
"We are in a recruitment period for the Research Institute, and as an important employer in the Negev, we aim to train high quality manpower, and to advance it in order to supply it with a long-term place of employment," Nili Lipschitz, the executive human resources director at the Research Institute, said.
"The current training attracted a lot of candidates and students who were chosen to be a part of this rich, high-level learning experience, which was created based on years of know-how developed at the Research Institute," she said.
Most of the chemical engineers to be trained in the course are expected to work at the Research Institute. The Institute is only part of a learning and training project that began in 2003 and that trained engineers in different subjects, such as mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering. Most these engineers ended up taking positions at the Nuclear Research Institute
