Statue of Nelson Mandela unveiled in West Bank

RAMALLAH - A 6-meter-high (20-foot) bronze statue of Nelson Mandela has been unveiled in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Tuesday.

Ramallah's Mayor Mussa Hadid said the statue was a gift from the Johannesburg municipality. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Johannesburg's Mayor Parks Tau took part in the unveiling.

Hadid says the statue reflects the "special relationship between South Africa and Palestine." It was erected in a new square named after Mandela.

The ceremony coincided with the 22nd anniversary of the end of Apartheid.

Hundreds of Palestinian attended the unveiling and took photos with the statue.
