Situation in Aleppo "catastrophic", aid lifeline in jeopardy

The situation in Aleppo is "catastrophic" after deadly overnight air strikes on a hospital, and the aid lifeline that delivers supplies to millions of Syrians risks being broken, the United Nations said on Thursday.

Jan Egeland, chairman of the humanitarian task force, told reporters after a weekly meeting of major and regional powers in the International Syria Support Group (ISSG): "I cannot express how high the stakes are for the next hours and days.

"The catastrophic deterioration in Aleppo over the last 24-48 hours, also in parts of Homs area, was reported live to members of ISSG today...No one doubted the severity of the situation," he said, calling for access to 35 besieged and hard-to-reach areas during May.
