2,500 people evacuated in Dominican Republic flooding

SANTO DOMINGO- Dominican emergency response groups say flooding caused by heavy rains has forced the evacuation of about 2,500 people.

Juan Manuel Mendez is the director of the Dominican Republic's Center of Emergency Operations. He told a news conference Sunday that people need to keep their guard up amid the possibility of more flooding and mudslides.

He said 10 homes had been destroyed by the high waters, and nearly 500 more have been flooded. Five bridges in the country have been damaged, cutting off access to 31 rural communities.
