Turkish businessman alleges overreach by US in bail fight

Saying his client is not a terrorist, the lawyer for a Turkish businessman arrested on charges he helped Iran evade sanctions insisted in court papers Tuesday that the U.S. government stretched the law to prosecute him.

Prosecutors want Reza Zarrab, 32, held without bail until trial, saying he can flee using contacts worldwide and enormous assets.

Attorney Benjamin Brafman, representing Zarrab, submitted papers in advance of a Thursday bail hearing in Manhattan federal court to say U.S. prosecutors made an "unprecedented reach" of U.S. law to prosecute a foreigner.
