UN chief: Fight extremism with education, social media

UNITED NATIONS - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has presented a plan to the 193-member General Assembly aimed at preventing violent extremism around the world.

Ban's report focuses on preventive measures such as conflict resolution, the empowerment of youth, education and the use of social media to "challenge the narratives associated with violent extremism." It's part of the General Assembly's meeting Friday on the UN's global counter-terrorism strategy.

In September 2006, the General Assembly adopted a counter-terrorism resolution that condemns terrorism in all its forms and underscores the resolve of the international community to strengthen the global response to terrorism.

Ban writes in the report that "we need to pay more attention to why individuals are attracted to violent extremist groups."
