Obama expanding refugee program for Central Americans

The Obama administration is expanding efforts to help Central American families and children legally immigrate to the United States amid another surge of migrants caught crossing the border illegally.

Homeland Security and State Department officials say the administration is expanding efforts to screen families who might qualify to move to the United States and expand an effort help children reunited with parents who are already living in the United States legally.

White House Deputy Homeland Security Adviser Amy Pope says Costa Rica also start accepting some families from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala who are in need an immediate safe haven. The efforts are designed to combat the crush of tens of thousands of families and unaccompanied children caught crossing the border illegally this year.
