Dozens stuck overnight in Mont-Blanc cable cars

None

LYON - Some sixty people were stranded overnight in cable cars near Europe's highest mountain, Mont Blanc, when a ride between two mountain peaks came to an abrupt halt on Thursday, police said.

The 5-km (3-mile) ride between the Aiguille du Midi and Helbronner peaks is at an altitude of 3,000 metres (yards) and usually takes 35 minutes, but stopped at 5:30pm (1530 GMT). France 3 TV said the cables had become tangled in high winds.

Four helicopters had managed to rescue about 50 people from the cable cars before night fell over the Alps. They then delivered blankets and food to those still stuck inside.
