Israeli ambassador requests UN serve kosher meals

Though the United Nations cafeterias offer Halal, vegetarian and vegan selections, it does not offer kosher food; Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon is moving to change this in a letter he wrote to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, in which he asks him for kosher food, so that all the citizens of the world may feel welcome at the UN.

Israel's Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon recently addressed the lack of kosher food in a letter he wrote UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Danon claimed that despite there being many Jewish diplomats working at the UN who keep kosher, the UN headquarters does not offer a kosher meal option.

Stating he believes that all the world's citizens should be made to feel welcome at the UN, Danon's letter to Ban also stressed the fact that the UN currently only works with one kosher food supplier, which prevents any sort of competition and allows said supplier to charge 40% more than other, non-kosher suppliers when catering a UN event. For this reason, Danon asked that the UN begin working with additional kosher companies.

Sources in the UN said there is a good chance that Danon's request will be granted. Over the last few years, the UN has begun relenting under consistent Israeli pressure, agreeing, for instance, to make Yom Kippur an official holiday in the UN. Additionally, this year Danon celebrated the very first seder for UN ambassadors and invited the representatives of over 70 countries to the Broadway show "Fiddler on the Roof."
