Obama and Netanyahu: Years of humiliation

Op-ed: During his two terms in office, the US president constantly turned his back on Israel while courting the Palestinians and allowing Iran to become a nuclear state one day.

"I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world," US President Barack Obama said to the sounds of loud applause which rocked not only the hall, but the world. "One based upon mutual interest and mutual respect; and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive, and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles—principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings."

This speech, which sounds like a funny joke today, was not delivered at the United Nations this week. It was delivered by Obama in Cairo in June 2009, passionately and innocently (if we judge him favorably) or passionately and foolishly (if we judge him unfavorably).

After the Cairo speech, the deluge arrived. We innocently called it the Arab Spring, but the blows it dealt humanity forced us to wake up from our dream. The political flood, which dismantled countries, hit the world with rivers of blood from the breeding ground of Islamic terror.

In that notorious speech, Obama dedicated long sentences to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and vowed not to turn his back on the Palestinian aspirations. Several days later, he clarified exactly what he meant by turning the soles of his shoes at the camera while talking to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the phone. That picture, of Obama with his feet on the table, has been engraved on our minds. It was intentionally and officially distributed to the press by the White House.

After the humiliation, then came the pressure for concessions and the demand to freeze settlements. Israel agreed to the freeze, although Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas firmly refused to recognize the State of Israel as the Jewish people's national home and continued to support Islamic terror against Israel. The negotiations reached a stalemate, but Obama persisted in his efforts to force a freeze. When Netanyahu clarified that the State of Israel was a sovereign state and advanced a construction plan in Israel's capital Jerusalem, not in the settlement of Negohot, the White House went wild. Islamic terror continued to hit the Western world, but Obama and his emissaries were busy courting the Palestinians, who continued inciting terror, until eventually, they too grew tired.

Obama continued to turn his back on Netanyahu when he excluded Israel out from the negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program. Netanyahu was forced to restore his dignity in a Congress speech and apply as much pressure as possible in order to prevent an agreement that the Western world would regret. Obama sponsored an agreement which would allow Iran, a country which exports Islamic terror and calls for Israel's destruction on a daily basis, to become a nuclear state in the future. Despite the threat Israel is facing, Obama conducted tough negotiations on military aid to the only democracy in the Middle East.

In all of Obama's many speeches, including the final one on Tuesday, he failed to mention the term Islamic terror in his bid to maintain political correctness. Islamic terror is raging in New York and in Israel, but Obama has not heard about it. As far as he is concerned, there is only ISIS, a terrifying monster which has nothing to do with Islam. Unlike the Cairo speech, this time Obama dedicated just a few sentences to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Such a miserable failure after two terms should not be praised.

Netanyahu, in his UN speech, completed what Obama is afraid to think about and say, while thanking Obama for the military aid. There is definitely a lot to be thankful for. A moment before getting off the stage, Obama remembered to direct something at Israel apart from his back.

The only thing missing is the final image: Netanyahu relaxing on the chair in his office, his legs on the table, satisfied with the dollars pouring down on him.
