Firefighters were called to the Prime Minister’s Residence late Wednesday evening on Balfour Street in Jerusalem after a fire broke out on the roof of the building due to a short circuit in the air conditioner.
The firefighters, who were called to the scene at approximately 11:30pm, extinguished the fire before anyone was injured.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife were not present during the fire as the two are in New York as the Israeli leader prepares to speak before the UN General Assembly.
The fire was spotted after security personnel smelled burning and scoured the area which led them to the rooftop. The relatively fast response from the firefighters and their ability to rapidly extinguish the fire prevented more serious damage being caused and the outbreak of another fire in the electrical box, which could have endangered the entire building.
