UN Sec-Gen 'appalled' by Syria violence

None

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he is "appalled" by the current spike in violence around the contested Syrian city of Aleppo.

As an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council continued on Sunday, Ban said the city is facing "the most sustained and intense bombardment since the start of the Syrian conflict."

He focused in particular on reports of the use of so-called "bunker-busting bombs" that are designed to target underground structures. "Let us remember: the fighting has forced hospitals and schools to operate in basements. These bombs are not busting bunkers; they are demolishing ordinary people looking for any last refuge of safety," added Ban.
