PM meets with Israeli Ambassador to UNESCO to discuss resuming cooperation

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Israeli Ambassador to UNESCO Carmel Shama Hacohen (Likud) and Acting Foreign Ministry Director Yuval Rotem to discuss any future relationship Israel might have with the organization.

Last month, the United Nations body of UNESCO passed a resolution that stressed Muslims' connection to Temple Mount while failing to recognize Jews' connection to the site. Responding to the report, Israel withdrew Shama Hacohen from the organization and stopped cooperating with it.

Shama Hacohen is due to return to Paris within the next few days to meet with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, in an attempt to reconcile and resume cooperation. Bokova herself stated after the report's publication that she opposed it and that UNESCO will continue to fight against anti-Semitism.
