The Israel Prison Service announced that Sheikh Raed Salah, the leader of the northern branch of the Islamic Movement, has declared a hunger strike after returning four meals.
As a result, food stuffs, electrical products and canteen goods were removed from his cell. During a search of his cell, several letters were discovered which were taken for a closer examination.
Salah is serving a nine month sentence in the separation wing of Ramon prison for his conviction for incitement to violence and racism in the wake of a sermon given in east Jerusalem in 2007.
