Anan Hakrush, a 48-year-old from the Arab town of Kafr Kanna in the Galilee, was found on Saturday shot in a vehicle outside of town. He was evacuated by paramedics in critical condition the Poriya Medical Center in Tiberias, where he was eventually pronounced dead.
The identity of the shooter is reported to be known to the police, whose officers are combing through the area in search of him.
The victim is the nephew of Deputy Commissioner Jamal Hakrush, who was appointed in April by Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan police chief Roni Alsheikh to become the highest-ranking Muslim to serve in the Israel Police. He is in charge of overseeing law enforcement within Arab communities.
A relative of the deceased commented on the killing, saying, "We didn't know he was threatened by anyone, otherwise we would have settled it without any violence. I hope the police will reach some conclusion. In the meantime, we're waiting for the investigation to end; we might find out what led to the incident some time in the future."
