Firefighters unloading stretchers at burned site in Oakland, California

Firefighters are unloading stretchers at the scene of a burned out building after the blaze killed at least nine in Oakland, California.

Authorities also are setting up tents to block views of the entrance to the burned warehouse that was the site of an electronic music dance party. Fire officials have said getting into the building has been difficult because it structurally unsound.

Officials say they fear up to 40 people might have died in the building that was converted into artist studios.

Oakland Fire Chief Teresa Deloche-Reed says the building didn't have a clear exit path and that the only way out of the second floor was a makeshift stairwell built from pallets.
