A program implemented by the IDF has been approaching overweight soldiers and offering them to partake in a plan that includes a healthier lifestyle with a balanced diet and exercises to perform on their down time.
Implemented within the Kfir Infantry Brigade—whose name means 'lion cub'—the plan has been named "the Lions' Project." It includes the ten Kfir soldiers with the highest body mass index (BMI) in the brigade.
The soldiers are put through a rigorous training program aimed at preparing them to lead a healthier lifestyle. So far, it seems to be working, as those who persist in the program attest to having developed greater physical health.
The project started some three years ago, and so far it has been hailed as a success. The soldiers taking part in it have lost ten, and even 20 kilos. They have managed to complete10km runs whereas before they could not manage even a single kilometer. Moreover, they are able to maintain their healthy lifestyle and more svelte physique even after their time in the program is over.
"We show our troops that we don't give up on a single soldier," said Lt. Matan Portal, who commands the soldiers. "They go through additional training too. We diligently keep them on a proper diet with exercise and maintain their health. The program increases their capabilities and shows them that that is where you start to win."
