Sefad's chief rabbi testifies in MK sexual assault investigation
In ongoing investigation into sexual assault allegations levelled against Nissan Slomiansky, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu provides evidence, says he collected testimony from 2 women who claim they were harassed.
Safed Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu provided testimony for the police Monday afternoon on the case concerning sexual assault complaints filed against MK Nissan Slomiansky (Bayit Yehudi).
In recent weeks, Eliyahu has headed an independent team that he established to look into the claims, and collected evidence from two women claiming that Slomiansky assaulted them.
Last month, Slomiansky announced his resignation from the position of director of the Constitutional, Law and Justice Committee in light of the claims made against him.
“I am aware of the weight of responsibility entailed in the job, but more importantly, I think the right thing to do is to allow a fair check into all the claims that have been made,” Slomiansky said.
After the announcement however, Slomiansky said that he had no intention of suspending himself from the Knesset.
"MK Nissan Slomiansky has never harassed women. After a meeting with several rabbis, he understood that his warmhearted behavior, which is the same toward everyone, is sometimes interpreted in a different way, and for that he is sorry. MK Slomiansky has been serving the public for 40 years, including time in the Knesset, and he will continue to do so," said an official on his behalf.
The statement apologized for “hugging or shaking a hand or touching an elbow without any sexual intention.”
