Government officials address the Netanyhu-Mozes case

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, Yesh Atid Chairperson Yair Lapid and head of the opposition Isaac Herzog all touch on the frenzy surrounding the Netanyahu-Mozes case; 'These are difficult days for democracy in Israel, but there is no doubt our democracy is strong and will withstand this,' says Herzog.

Referring to the expanding '2000 case' involving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Yedioth Ahronoth owner and publisher Arnon Mozes, several government officials have spoken out Monday.

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit defended the decision to wait on an investigation, saying, "Waiting with an investigation was an informed decision. To make use of the recordings required a complex and careful legal review."

Referring to the notoriety of the investigation itself, Mandelblit said, "This situation, conducting an investigation in the middle of a media, social and political frenzy has imposed on law enforcement and myself a tremendous responsibility to make sure that all investigative considerations are made professionally.

"I want to publicly say that my people and I, as well as the Israel Police, will continue to act on cases such as this with professionalism and with our only goal being to arrive at the truth and continue the rule of law. There is no other option and we will not deviate from this."

Yesh Atid Chairperson MK, Yair Lapid, addressed the investigation at a Knesset committee meeting, saying, "Everything that is really important has been pushed aside. We need to let the police conduct the investigation and the attorney general to examine the evidence gathered during the investigation, but it cannot take too long.

"There is a country to run here. There are real problems and we can't allow a prime minister to spend too much time in investigation rooms and meeting with lawyers when he needs to be in cabinet meetings and discussing the economy."

Head of the opposition and Chairman of the Zionist Union, MK Isaac Herzog, said, "These are difficult days for democracy in Israel, but also days of cleaning and exposure. There is no doubt that our democracy is strong and will withstand this. It is important to say and emphasize that the political system is not corrupt to the core and neither are journalists and the media, because there are good and powerful forces working to right these wrongs.

"Yesterday it was revealed that Netanyahu decided to go to the polls, which cost the taxpayers hundreds of millions of shekels, for his own personal interests and those of private commercial enterprises. Netanyahu has shown himself to be a merchant of Israeli democracy, which he treats as his private property. Every Israeli citizen should be concerned by the image of Israeli democracy and by Netanyahu's other exploits that have not yet been exposed."
