Cadets injured in Jerusalem attack receive platoon commander pin

Upon becoming officers, those injured in Jerualem's deadly vehicular attack receive pin for their courage in action; 'I think we reacted well,' says 2nd Lt. Dana Ofir, who was injured in the attack. 'I really don't take it for granted that I'm talking with you after an attack like that.'

Three weeks after a terrorist crashed a truck into a group of cadets in Jerusalem, killing four, the new officers' graduation ceremony took place in the southern desert town of Mitzpe Ramon. The officers who were injured in the attack received a special honor, when they were awarded platoon commander pins for their bravery and action.

The officers' ceremony honored the memory of Erez Orbach, Yael Yakutiel, Shir Hajaj and Shira Tzur, who were all killed in the attack.

"This is a moving ceremony, but one that is incomplete," said GOC Commander Maj. Gen. Kobi Barak. "We have with us those injured in the attack. You represent the triumph of the special, victorious spirit that we in the IDF carry with us. During the attack in Jerusalem, we witnessed the striving for contact and taking on responsibility that are expected from our commanders and cadets. This is the basis of our moral actions as soldiers and commanders in the IDF, and for this reason we will always be victorious."

2nd Lt. Dana Ofir was among the officers to receive the pin after being injured in the attack. "The past few weeks have been hard," admitted Ofir. "I spent time in the hospital, and now I'm resting at home. I've been getting around in a wheelchair. It isn't easy, but it's really exciting and fun and makes me proud to be here and receive this pin. There are a lot of hardships and there's still a long process ahead, but we're here and we're strong. Those who were killed are also here with us, we remember them and are here for them."

Referring to the attack itself, Ofir said, "I think we reacted well, which is what everyone said. We strove for contact, which is what's important. I really don't take it for granted that I'm talking with you after an attack like that."
