False Code Red alert near the Gaza border

Just hours after state comptroller report is released, false Code Red alert sounds in Sha'ar HaNegev Council and in Sdot Negev, followed by an explosion heard by the residents.

Only an hour after the State Comptroller's report about Protective Edge was published on Tuesday, residents near the Gaza border received a reminder that the security situation remains volatile when a Code Red alert was sounded on Tuesday afternoon in Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council and in Sdot Negev, which turned out to be a false alarm.

Following the alarm, residents reported hearing an explosion. Security forces are investigating whether the rocket fell inside the Gaza Strip or if it was a failed launch.

Even prior to the attack, a Hamas military wing spokesperson referred to the Protective Edge report by saying that the organization will respond to "any future Israeli aggression like the one carried out on Monday," and added that it appears Israel only understands power.

On Monday afternoon, Israeli aircrafts attacked targets in the Gaza Strip in response to a rocket launched on the night between Sunday and Monday, exploding in an open area of Sdot Negev Regional Council.

The attacks were carried out against outposts near the Nuseirat refugee camp, as well as against targets in the south and north of Gaza.

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said after the attack: "I would like to return to the policy that I set at the Defense Ministry since my appointment. We have no desire or intention to initiate a military operation in the Gaza Strip. But we will not tolerate even a drizzle of rocket fire. We will not get into a ping-pong situation of fire and counter-fire. I suggest Hamas take responsibility, impose order and calm down."
