2 dead as explosion rocks fireworks storage facility
Explosion in moshav Porat facility sends smoke billowing into the sky, leading to evacuation of residents from nearby homes; two people have been killed and seven injured in the blast.
An explosion at a fireworks storage facility in moshav Porat on Tuesday left two people dead, seriously injured a 50-year-old man and lightly injured six others, including a 2-month-old infant and a 12-year-old boy.
Fire and Rescue services were called to the scene to search for people possibly trapped and also provided medical attention to the wounded. Two bodies has been found thus far and crews are continuing to search the area.
Thick, black smoke could be seen wafting into the sky from a distance following the initial explosion and several secondary explosions occurred intermittently.
Fire and Rescue crews are working to prevent damage to nearby homes, but residents of surrounding streets have been evacuated from their homes as a precaution.
"We heard a massive explosion. The windows were shaking. We were sure that a missile fell. It's terrifying what happened here," said a local resident.
