PM involvement in media supervision bill imperiled

In light of the ongoing conflict regarding the IPBC that is currently preoccupying the government, the AG is now looking into the PM's possible conflict of interest in the media supervision bill, which might put a stop to his involvement in legislating on the matter.

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit is now exploring the possibility of preventing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from involvement in the legislation to supervise the media due to a conflict of interest.

This is believed to also be a way to resolve the ongoing conflict around the Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation (IPBC).

Since Netanyahu was forced to leave his position as the Minister of Communications due to a conflict of interest, the attorney general is looking into ways that the currently formulating legislation might also put him in a conflict of interest.

The bill, which aims to shut down the IPBC, may impact people affiliated with Netanyahu (such as Arnon Milchan), and if so will prohibit his involvement.

Leader of the Opposition and Zionist Union Chairman Isaac Herzog sent a letter on Sunday to Mandelblit inquiring whether the prime minister is even allowed to be involved in the matter of the aforementioned legislation.

Mandelblit will have to decide on the issue within the next few days.
