Greenpeace: 'coal power station pollution will claim the lives of dozens of people'

Greenpeace Israel have commented on the plume of smoke coming out of the Orot Rabin coal-fired power station, saying "it is not clear who is the copywriter who declared the smoke coming from the station's chimney as a white plume, but that is definitely not just water vapor.
"Even with the scrubbers (gas purifiers), the pollutants coming from units 5 and 6 will claim the lives of dozens of people every year. We must put an end to this health toll, and the Energy Minister must prepare for complete withdrawal from coal just as was done in other countries, like Britain, Austria and others."
Greenpeace Israel further emphasized that Energy and Water Resources Minister Yuval Steinitz must commit to gradually closing the old production units (1-4). By the end of this month, Steinitz is supposed to file the government's proposal to close the units by 2022. "We call Steinitz to close half of the units within two years and to plan for an earlier closure of the other units in order to save human lives," Greenpeace said.
