High Court of Justice: supermarkets may remain open on the Sabbath

Israel’s High Court of Justice has ruled on Wednesday that supermarkets in Tel Aviv may remain open on Saturday, the day of the Sabbath, despite objection by the religious community, who considers it a violation of the Sabbath.
This follows a petition against Tel Aviv's municipality who authorized the operation of recreational facilities and supermarkets on Saturday.
“Different people hold different opinions about the translation of the law ruling that the Sabbath must be recognized as a day of rest,” wrote Judge Daphne Barak-Erez in the verdict.
Mayor of Tel Aviv Ron Huldai praised the court’s decision, saying that “Tel Aviv is, and will remain, free.”
