Former CIA prisoner shrugs off risk to testify at Guantanamo

MIAMI -- The first CIA captive subjected to so-called "enhanced interrogation techniques" after the Sept. 11 attacks is choosing to testify about conditions inside the Guantanamo Bay detention center even if it could create legal problems for him later.

A judge has ruled that the Palestinian known as Abu Zubaydah would not be granted immunity for anything he might say while testifying on behalf of a fellow Guantanamo prisoner. Lawyer Mark Denbeaux says his client wants to testify anyway at a hearing next week at the US base in Cuba.

He said in a letter released Thursday that Zubaydah is not worried because he does not believe he will ever be prosecuted after 15 years in custody without charge. Prosecutors say he remains a "potential target" for charges.
