Footage: the assassin who killed senior Hamas figure leaves the scene

Hamas held a press conference in which it presented a photograph allegedly incriminating Ashraf Abu Laila in the assassination of senior Hamas figure Mazen Fukha in the Gaza Strip.

On Tuesday, Hamas held a press conference in which it presented a photograph that allegedly captures the assassin who killed Mazen Fukha in the Gaza Strip at the end of March as he is seen leaving the scene.

On Friday, Fukha's family reported that the suspect was Ashraf Abu Laila,37, a Palestinian from the Nuseirat refugee camp in the center of the Gaza Strip.

The press conference featured videos of two other detainees allegedly involved in the assassination. The videos recounted the preparations for the operation, which lasted eight months, and the instructions they received from the Shin Bet.

Since the publication of the arrest in the Gaza Strip, Gaza officials claim that Abu Laila used to be a member of Hamas' military wing and was expelled from it for moral offenses. Later, it was claimed that he joined one of the Salafi groups in the Gaza Strip and was recruited by Israel.

Other sources noted that the suspect was a car dealer and that his brother was a senior member of the military wing of Hamas. It was also claimed that some of Abu Laila's family members work in various government institutions in Gaza that are subordinate to Hamas.

Fukha was assassinated at close range near his home in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood of southwest Gaza City by an assassin or assassins who used weapons with a silencer. They shot him in the head with four bullets and fled. He died instantly.

After the assassination, Hamas pointed an accusing finger at Israel and claimed that it wanted to create fear among the other released prisoners who had been deported to the Gaza Strip and felt that they were protected from liquidation. During the investigation, Hamas imposed a siege on Gaza and prohibited the entry and exit of any person except for exceptional humanitarian cases.

Fukha, a Hamas member from Tubas, was sentenced in 2003 in Israel to nine life terms after having been convicted of sending a terrorist to carry out a suicide bombing attack. The terrorist blew himself up on an Egged bus near Safed killing 9 people.

He was released from prison in the Shalit deal in 2011 and due to the gravity of his actions, he was deported to the Gaza Strip.
