Bereaved parents still awaiting Protective Edge report

Parents of soldiers killed during the 2014 Gaza conflict are still awaiting a report on conclusions from the operation that is supposed to address military shortcomings; Netanyahu promised in April a copy would be made available within two weeks.

Forty-nine days have passed since bereaved parents of soldiers killed during Operation Protective Edge were promised a report on operational conclusions and solutions concerning the summer 2014 conflict in Gaza. At the time, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised parents a copy of the report would be available within two weeks.

Netanyahu made his promise during a Knesset meeting on State Comptroller Yosef Shapira's report on Operation Protective Edge.

The meeting was stormy and several confrontations erupted, most notably between Leah Goldin, mother of fallen soldier Lt. Hadar Goldin, and Likud MK Miki Zohar. Additional outbursts were leveled against the committee by Ilan Sagi, whose son was killed fighting near Nahal Oz after Hamas terrorists infiltrated an IDF outpost via its tunnel network.

MK Karin Elharar (Yesh Atid), who chaired the committee, sent a message to the Prime Minister's Office in which she stated, "The only relief the bereaved parents are looking for today is to hear that the shortcomings of the operation have been addressed, so that other families won't need to deal with loss."

Elharar had also promised parents that if the failures of the operation were not addressed, she would push for a state commission of inquiry.

According to Elharar, materials have not yet been made available to parents despite "repeated requests to the Prime Minister's Office during which officials said they were aware of the significant deviation from the timetable and promised to release the report quickly."

In response, the Prime Minister's Office issued a statement saying, "The Office of the National Security Council advisor is working in coordination with the director of the State Control Committee."
