For the first time: Miri Regev serves as acting prime minister
Netanyahu flies to Greece on diplomatic trip, notifying Min. of Culture Regev that she will serve as acting PM; Regev humorously responds: 'I'll let you know if I happen to start a coup.'
Regev, for her part, responded with humor and said to the prime minister: "I'll let you know if I happen to start a coup."
Although this is only a temporary appointment, Regev is the first woman to serve as prime minister since Golda Meir.
Ministers Yuval Steinitz, Ofir Akunis and Eli Cohen joined Netanyahu in the meeting with the Greek government and in signing agreements. The prime minister will hold a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and another meeting with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades.
In addition, a trilateral meeting will be held and a joint statement will be issued that will include cooperation between the two countries in the fields of energy, communications, environmental protection, innovation and scientific research.
The purpose of the inter-governmental consultations and the tripartite meeting is to further strengthen the strategic cooperation that is developing between Greece and Israel and Cyprus and discussions on regional and strategic issues.
As part of the visit, an unveiling ceremony will take place to mark the establishment of the Holocaust Museum in Thessaloniki, and a ceremony expressing gratitude to Israel for the assistance provided by the Israeli navy during the earthquake that struck the island of Cephalonia in 1953. Israeli naval vessels were the first to arrive and offer assistance.
