The United Nations envoy to the Middle East, Nikolai Maldanov, met in Gaza yesterday with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and senior Hamas officials to try to bridge the crisis between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority over the suspension of electricity and the supply of diesel fuel to the Gaza power plant.

The newspaper Al-Hayat reported this morning that Maldanov had suggested to Hamas that the European Union pay the excise tax on diesel fuel entering the Gaza Strip to operate the power plant, which Hamas and the Palestinian Authority refuse to pay, and in return, a transparent system will be set up to manage electricity in Gaza and the way it is taxed.
