Terror victim's father insists attackers 'not part of Arab sector'

Speaking during a condolence visit by Israeli MKs and security leaders to the family home of Maj. Kamil Shnaan, who was slain in a terror attack on Friday, former MK Shachiv Shnaan says: 'The sons of evil are not representative of the Arab sector.'

Former MK Shachiv Shnaan, the father of Maj. Kamil Shnaan, 22, who was killed in Friday’s terror attack at the Lions’ Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City, condemned Sunday the perpetrators, insisting they “are not part of the (Arab sector) while we are an integral party of the state.”

Speaking during a visit paid to the family home in Hurfeish by Police Commissioner Roni Alsheikh, Shachiv said that “We want to strengthen all policemen, especially the officers on Temple Mount,” before drawing a clear distinction between the terrorists and the majority of the Arab sector.

“The sons of evil who murdered my son and Staff Sgt. Maj. Ha'il Satawi, are not representatives of the Arab sector, they are foreign implants. We were, we remained and we will always remain part of the state,” he continued. “We have Bedouin friends, Circassian friends, Muslim friends and Christian friends, not to mention Jewish friends, Jewish brothers that we live with. This country is our country.”

Earlier, Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan spoke about the attack in the Temple Mount, describing the shootings as “abhorrent.”

“To attack in Temple Mount in the most abhorrent way, not like brave fighters but like cowards who (attack) from behind and shoot a fighter in the back. There is no act more abhorrent than this,” Erdan said.

Turning to the father, Erdan furnished praise on the former MK for his commitment to the state and for the values which he pioneers.

“My dear brother Shachiv. We have known each other for many years. Shachiv was always a man of peace, a man of brotherhood and friendship. We worked together … I always saw you as a friend and a brother and a man who leads the public according to values and belief that he believes in, the right values,” he said.

“We need to cooperate and to continue, despite the immense pain, in the name of a shared destiny, in the name of the alliance between us and in the name of the community and the citizens we represent. Our obligation, a moral obligation towards the Druze community and the public at large, is becoming even heavier and bigger.”

The Temple Mount was gradually opened for worshipers on Sunday two days after the deadly attack, with additional security measures added at its entrance gates, including metal detectors and security cameras.
