Qatar says UN should play a role in resolving Gulf crisis

Qatar's foreign minister is calling on the United Nations to help resolve the crisis in the Persian Gulf and accusing the four Arab countries that have isolated his energy-rich nation of violating international law.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani tells reporters that Egypt, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain are showing "stubbornness" and have not taken any steps to solve the crisis.

He vows that Qatar will spare no effort to overcome what he calls "violations" and says "the United Nations is the right platform to start from."

Al Thani adds that the Security Council, the General Assembly and "all the United Nations mechanisms" can play a role.

He spoke Thursday after meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
