Israeli/US/French naval exercise

Israeli, US, French navies conclude two-week drill

The three friendly navies conduct exercises in Haifa involving naval mines, underwater demolitions and sea-borne terror attack scenarios; first ever naval exercise involving the French Navy.

The Israeli Navy's Salvage and Underwater Works Unit has completed an extensive joint exercise—dubbed Noble Melinda—with the US and French navies held in Haifa. The exercise is the first operation of its kind to involve the French Navy.

The two-week exercise included drills involving naval mines, underwater demolitions and sea-borne terror attacks.

"The French are especially adept at neutralizing underwater mines due to previous French experiences in war. As such, we learned a lot from them in this respect and they learned a lot from us in underwater demolitions," explained a senior naval officer.

"Next year we'll practice together instead of doing drills separately and combine team members from different navies."

The navy noted that beyond simply learning from one another, the exercise was intended to improve the relationship between the friendly navies in the event that collaboration becomes necessary in the future.
