Supreme Court suspended the decision on surrogacy for same-sex couples

None

The High Court of Justice granted the Knesset six months to complete legislation that would allow same-sex couples to perform surrogacy procedures in Israel. A bill that aims to allow this has already passed its first voting round, though the possibility of it becoming law is far from certain, particularly in a government whose unltra-Orthodox parties threaten to block any pro-LGBT bills.

At present, the law in Israel only allows a heterosexual couple to initiate surrogacy, while same-sex couples are required to do so abroad and to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for the process.

"As soon as we announced that on 17 July, a bill to amend the Surrogacy Law passed on first reading, we found that the time had not yet come to decide a final decision on the petition," Justice Salim Joubran stated in his final decision before his retirement.
