German journalist stands trial in Turkey on terror charges

A German journalist has appeared before a Turkish court on terror charges, the first of 11 German or German-Turkish citizens arrested in Turkey to go on trial.

Mesale Tolu, a German citizen with Turkish roots, stands accused of making terrorist propaganda and being a member of a banned left-wing group. Trial began Wednesday at a courthouse in Istanbul's outskirts.

The 33 year-old, who was detained in May, denies the accusations. She is among dozens of reporters jailed in Turkey following last year's failed coup.

Tolu's case is one of many issues souring relations between Germany and Turkey.

Deniz Yucel, a German-Turkish journalist for German newspaper Die Welt was arrested Feb. 14. Turkish authorities accuse him of disseminating terrorist propaganda and inciting hatred, as well as espionage. Yucel denies the allegations.
