Spain arrests former aide to Venezuela's UN ambassador

Spanish police have arrested a former aide to Venezuela's ambassador to the United Nations on a US warrant in connection to a $1 billion bribery scheme at Venezuela's state-run oil company.

Spain's Civil Guard says Friday that Rafael Reiter was detained in Madrid a day after three former Venezuelan officials were also arrested on money laundering charges. A former deputy energy minister is among those in custody.

Reiter was a corporate security manager at state-run oil company PDVSA when it was led by Rafael Ramirez, who is now ambassador to the UN.

Ten businessmen have already plead guilty as part of the US probe into corruption at PDVSA.

Ramirez has not been charged, but has previously dismissed the case as an attempt to undermine President Nicolas Maduro's government.
