Iran-Iraq quake death toll hits 430 in Iran

TEHRAN – Iran's state-run news agency says the death toll from a powerful earthquake along the Iran-Iraq border has risen to 430 in that country.

 

The report from the IRNA news agency says Tuesday morning the number of injured has risen to 7,156 people.

 

More than half of the casualties are from the Kurdish-majority town of Sarpol-e Zahab in Kermansh province. The only hospital in the town was heavily damaged and the army has set up field hospitals.

 

The magnitude-7.3 quake was centered 19 miles (31 kilometers) outside the eastern Iraqi city of Halabja, the US Geological Survey said.

Iran's government declared Tuesday as a national mourning day.
