MK Peretz: 'No contradiction between left-wing and Judaism'

Following Labor Party Chairman Avi Gabbay's remarks, echoing a years'-old quote by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that "the left had forgotten what it's like to be Jews", MK Amir Peretz—who ran against Gabbay in the party's primaries—said, "No one is going to tell me what it's like to be Jewish. I belong to the left wing, I'm a liberal and a democrat; these are not contradictory."

Peretz said he'd spoken to Gabbay, who clarified his intentions. "I think he meant to say something else. He didn't intend to tell someone how to be Jewish. Gabbay told me he merely wanted to point out the left had made his liberal stance more prominent than his Jewish stance. There are certainly differences regarding the proper quantities," he said.
