Lieberman backs municipalities trying to keep businesses open on Shabbat

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Tuesday backed municipalities trying to amend their bylaws to allow businesses to remain open on Shabbat, while the coalition he is a member of is trying to pass the so-called supermarkets bill against such activity.

"Givatayim, Rishon LeZion, Holon and other cities are right. The activity in the public sphere on Shabbat is a matter for only the local authority to decide," he said.

In a tweet, Lieberman said his party supports the cities' struggle, adding "Yes to tradition and Jewish values, but no to religious coercion."
