Sephardi chief rabbi opposes death penalty for terrorists

None

Israel’s Sephardi Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef has come out in opposition to a bill that would make imposing capital punishment on certain terrorists easier.

The bill is being pursued by Yisrael Beytenu and recently received the green light from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to Yosef, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s legislative initiative of putting Palestinian terrorists to death would cause a storm and endanger Jews abroad.

Yosef also added that in the future, lawmakers would demand that the punishment be extended to Jewish terrorists, something that he said was forbidden according to Jewish law. “All security officials say that there is nothing to be gained by this,” Yosef said.
