Khamenei: Iran played significant role in defeating Islamic State in region

BEIRUT – Iran played a significant role in defeating Islamic State in the region, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday in a speech broadcast live on state TV.

Khamenei said the United States is not capable of creating stability in the region and pointed to the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan as an example during the speech from the city of Mashad.

The United States will not achieve its goal in the region but Iran will be successful, Khamenei said in the speech marking the first day of the Iranian new year.
