US recognizes contributions of 3 Polish WWII veterans

None

The United States has presented US flags to three Polish veterans of World War II to honor their struggle for Poland and the Allies against Nazi Germany.

The US defense attache in Warsaw, Col. John Downey, presented the flags to Col. Halina Jedrzejewska, who was a nurse during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising against the German occupation, and to two fighters in that revolt, Col. Eugeniusz Tyrajski and Col. Zbigniew Galperyn.

The flags had flown over Washington and were presented to the veterans on behalf of US Senator Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat.

The Germans killed some 200,000 Poles and flattened Warsaw in retaliation for the 63-day uprising. In a visit to Warsaw last year, President Donald Trump paid homage to the "desperate struggle to overthrow oppression."
