A New York federal court issued a verdict against Iran obliging it to pay tens of billions of dollars in remuneration to families of one thousands of the victims of the 9/11 attacks.
The judge issued the verdict in absentia, after Iran did not send a representative to the trial. The verdict said Iran must pay 12 million dollars to anyone who has lost a spouse in the attacks, 8 million dollars to each parent who lost a child and 4 million to anyone who has lost a sibling.
The decision is largely symbolic, as Iran cannot be forced to pay the compensation.
