Stats: West Bank construction rate rockets

Fresh statistics released by the Central Bureau of Statistics show that in the second quarter of 2018, construction began on 794 housing units, compared to 279 in the first quarter.

This year has seen a marked growth in the number of new Israeli construction projects and completed housing units in the West Bank, in contrast to the decline in the number of new housing within the Green Line, according to a new report published by the Central Bureau of Statistics.

The fresh figures indicate a reinvigorated momentum in the construction of housing units after either a significant reduction or partial freeze in the building of settlements.

In the second quarter of 2018, construction began on 794 units in the West Bank, compared to 279 in the first quarter of the year.

The figures are the highest since the last quarter of 2016.

A half-yearly comparison shows that in the first half of 2018, work got underway in the West Bank on 1,073 apartments, marking a 31% leap when compared to the second half of 2017 during which work began on 818 housing units.

It was also a 23% increase when compared to the first half of 2017, when construction began on 861 settler homes.

The 2018 rise in the number of completed apartments in the West Bank in its second quarter made it the highest number of new apartments to be completed over the Green Line since the beginning of 2016.
