Man detained in Lebanon on suspicion of entering from Israel

Lebanon's army intelligence detained a man on suspicion that he crossed into Lebanon from Israel, says a military official. The country's state news agency says the detainee is a US citizen.

The military official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, says the man is being questioned and once they have information the army will release a statement.

State-run National News Agency says the man is a US citizen who was stopped in the southern port-city of Tyre where he had been staying since Tuesday. It says the man was being questioned under the supervision of judicial authorities.

The US Embassy says it has seen the media report of the detention and "stand(s) ready to provide all appropriate consular services."

It adds that due to privacy considerations, "we have no further comment."
