UN discusses Israeli suspension of Hebron mission

UNITED NATIONS -- The U.N. Security Council has discussed Israel's suspension of an international observation mission amid concerns that its decision could exacerbate tensions on the ground in Hebron where hundreds of Jewish residents live alongside more than 200,000 Palestinians.
Equatorial Guinea's U.N. Ambassador Anatolio Ndong Mba, the current council president, said he had been authorized to inform the Israeli and Palestinian ambassadors about Wednesday's meeting and a draft press statement would be circulated to council members.
Ndong Mba signaled differences among council members about the suspension.
The United States reportedly says that its close ally has a right not to renew the temporary mission, while many others say the council needs "to take some preventive measures in view of what may happen as a result of the suspension."
