Leaders of the ultra-Orthodox knesset factions Interior Minister Aryeh Deri and dep. Health Minister Yaakov Litzman, have agreed their precondition in any coalition negotiations will be a ban on any public transport on Shabbat.
Individual municipalities have allowed non-profits to operate public transportation to the beaches and restaurants on Friday nights and during the day Saturday as a public service.
Religious politicians claim that is a violation of the status quo that governs relations between religious and secular communities.
