Maccabi Tel Aviv head coach Neven Spahija was fired Sunday after just one year on the job.
Spahija received word of his dismissal during a meeting with chairman Shimon Mizrahi and manager Mony Fanan despite leading the team to its 47th Israeli basketball championship.
The team’s season was marred by a disappointing Euroleague performance and a semi-finals loss to Bnei Hasharon in the Israeli cup.
Spahija holds a contract for an additional year with the club, and a severance agreement has not been finalized.
The Croatian coach has reportedly received offers from a number of European clubs, including Benetton Treviso and Climamio Bologna.
Maccabi is expected to ask respected American-Israeli coach David Blatt to return as head coach just four years after appointing Pini Gershon in his place. Blatt currently coaches Russia’s national team and Italy’s Benetton Treviso.
