Hebrew University slides from Times' top 100 list

Tel Aviv maintains 114th place, but Technion also spirals downward in London Times' annual ranking

The Hebrew University in Jerusalem has lost its place amongst the world's top 100 universities, sliding from 93rd to 102nd place in the annual list published by the London Times Thursday.

The paper ranks the top 200 universities in the world according to criteria such as published scientific studies as well as the quality of teaching and students, both local and international.

Tel Aviv University succeeded in maintaining its spot as number 114 for the second year in a row, a rating it shares with Pittsburg University. Haifa's Technion, however, slid from number 109 to number 132.

The ten leading universities on the list are all located in the US and Britain, with Harvard the only academic institute to receive a perfect score. Britain's Cambridge was ranked higher than Yale this year, and follows Harvard in second place.

One of the most significant criteria used by the Times to rank universities is the number of times its faculty members are quoted by scientific journals, and counts for 20% of its rating. Tel Aviv University is one of the top 20 in this category, and received 98 out of 100 points.

But all of the Israeli universities received low grades in a category that asks 5,000 scientists to rank the different institutions. The Hebrew University received 61 points in this category, and Tel Aviv and the Technion received 35 and 18 points respectively.

However Israel's universities were consoled by a different score given by the Times, in which it ranks space research in the past decade. Israel was ranked second, after Scotland, and succeeded in surpassing the US, Britain, Russia, and Canada.

The Technion stated in response to the publication that it was pleased to have remained among the top 30 engineering and science institutions in the world, and that the general scoring did not matter as it does not provide degrees in humanities or social sciences.
