The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is the name of Israel's armed forces, which include three main military branches (ground forces, air force, and navy). The IDF was formed subsequent to Israel's establishment in 1948 to "defend the existence, territorial integrity, and sovereignty of the state of Israel."
The IDF is headed by the chief of staff (lieutenant-general,) who is appointed by the government and answers to the defense and prime ministers.
Military service in Israel is compulsory for men and women over 18. Men serve for three years, and women serve for two.
